PERIPHERAL WORKOUT
Two artists go out to train, they don't fit the standards of their neighborhood, their city, or their imposing culture. This is a film made on the outskirts of Lisbon and speaks poetically and assertively about territorial occupation, post-colonialism, and social inequality still in force in Portuguese culture.

DIRECTOR'S COMMENTS

‘Peripheral Workout’ it’s a statement of anti-colonialism uprising. The film is lead by two mighty voices, Courage (Isabél Zuaa) and Race (Bruno Huca). They assume themselves as peripheral artists trying to build a reflection about disruptive ways of being, by crossing through these territories of “obsolete truths and resolute existences.” In an attitude of reflexion upon the social integration problems, their thoughts simultaneously reveals incoherences on the functionality of communitarian housing projects in the outer regions of Lisbon. In ‘Peripheral Workout’ there’s a sugestionable conception of peripheral zones, as being “anti-central” zones of the city - (I was inspired by the etymological root of the German word vorstadt), - since it’s from there that those who propel the business structures come out, to work at the services, at the governmental institutions, that are located, mostly, in the center of the city. The movie dismantles through an anti-filmic way, the surroundings of a mis formed urbanistic area, that shapes an incomplete and rudimentary neighborhood called Bairro Angola, in Camarate. I believe that “peripheral bodies” are in constant movement, they understand that their condition isn’t restricted to the behavioral scope. Although those bodies need to keep their minds savvy, because “It’s about the normalization of an inequality reproduction system. Our bodies were colonized to accept and to internalize this way of life. And when I say bodies, it’s about an organic whole that exists and that feeds itself from daily emotional training, from muscular tissues, from the mind and from all the rest. And it is in this vital plenitude that you and I can exist.” Originally from a text written by Lucila Clemente, - as a personal commentary about the diasporas’ contemporary occupation of the periphery. Here is a film to decentralize
